Welcome to My Handwritten Hobbit. It's all about how I made my own handwritten copy of this famous work by J.R.R. Tolkien, the prelude to his magnum opus The Lord of the Rings.

  1. Excellent work! I found this site while doing a search for Tolkien calligraphy. I have spent quite a bit of time trying to get his handwriting style down an have developed a blend of his and my own. He's been a great inspiration. I think you Hobbit project is wonderful. Bravo!

PS: Give Sharpie pens a try sometime if you've not done so already. They're fairly inexpensive and do very well on quality paper. I was surprised to see you got such quality out of ballpoints!

  2. Thanks for your kind feedback. I've never heard of Sharpie pens, I don't think we have them where I'm from.

  3. I really like the handwriting style you've used for this. It just feels hobbity. Does it have a particular name or is it just your own handwriting style?

    1. Thanx, Click! It certainly is not my own invention; it's called 'italic writing'; I agree that it has a hobbity feel, though it's difficult to determine just why...

  4. This was completely fascinating. being a bit of a pen and handwriting geek I watched the video over and over - mesmerising. I could have watched you write the whole book although I am sure filming that would have gone beyond the call of duty. I really hope you manage to do something with the finished book. Brilliant work - a labour of love I am sure - but so wonderful to watch and see created.

  5. Do you think the process of writing out the book improved your ability to recall details of its contents?

  6. I too enjoyed bumping into this - congratulations!. Why don't you treat yourself to a Pelikan M600 or M800 (depending on which one better suits your hand size) & find a nice ink and paper (archivable in both cases obviously) to go with it. You won't regret it :) You're next project truly deserves this. That said, I think the ballpoint pen results are very appealing. Here's to your next project!

  7. I make canvas prints and would love to feature your handwritten Hobbit in one of them! Please check out my Etsy to see the other's I've done (handwritten The Raven, Edgar Allan Poe) and let me know if you'd be interested. I'd be happy to talk about a partnership and royalties.
